The Architecture of Family

Family in Mani Ratnam's films is not a refuge — it is a structure, and structures can collapse. Agni Natchathiram pits two half-brothers against each other, their rivalry exposing the fault lines their father's choices created. Bombay places a family at the intersection of communal violence, where the act of existing as a unit becomes political. Alaipayuthey follows a marriage past its romantic beginning into the harder territory of cohabitation and compromise. Chekka Chivantha Vaanam is the darkest expression: a patriarch dies and his sons tear the family apart for control. Even Kannathil Muthamittal asks what family means when its biological foundation is absent. Thug Life reunites Mani Ratnam with Kamal Haasan around a man whose family obligations run deeper than law. He films family as something built, maintained, and — when neglected — dismantled.
