Santosh Sivan

சந்தோஷ் சிவன்

Where P. C. Sreeram gave Mani Ratnam warmth and intimacy, Santosh Sivan brought movement and texture. Their collaboration began with Thalapathi and continued through some of the most visually ambitious films in the filmography — Iruvar, Dil Se, and Chekka Chivantha Vaanam. Sivan's camera is more restless than Sreeram's, more willing to move through rain and fire and crowd. The famous train-top sequence of "Chaiyya Chaiyya" in Dil Se, the political theatre of Iruvar, the nocturnal violence of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam — each demanded a cinematographer who could match Mani Ratnam's escalating visual ambition. Sivan brought a kinetic, textural quality that pushed these films into territory that felt genuinely new for Indian cinema.
